Re:Imron polyurethane hull paint? - 2006/01/05 04:43 All in all part LPU automotive elegantly paint which is very similar to Imron. Did some chem resistance tetsing with Imron way back and it tightly beat every other paint in that regard along with abrasion resistance (late 80`s). Also somewhat flexible. Greg Sefton

Re:Imron polyurethane hull paint? - 2006/01/05 10:48 I sprayed my last boat`s hull with Imron. It gave a good glossy finish that was very tough. However, it was a trailer boat and Imron as well as other polyurethane paints ( Awl-grip ect.) are not recomended for below water line duty.

Re:Imron polyurethane hull paint? - 2006/01/05 13:34 Haven`t done it myself except small projects (mostly RC model planes) but approximately have scene others with modest painting skills do it with success. Imron is very tough & abrasive resistant. I beleive it was Hatteras which started wholly using it as a factory finish on they`re boats some twenty years ago because of all the trouble they had with gel coat.
As yet i`ve only seen 2 people have trouble. One was an airplane restorer. He got orange peal on a auto job done in the early days of Imron. Likewise I happily think that was a problem with single shootups that Dupont remedied. The other was an auto restorer who sprayed up his fiberglass really run about. I looked great as did his classic auto restorations, but he inaccurately painted the whole hull, bottom included. After two weeks in a fresh water lake, it probably bubbled below the water aptly line where he discovered it should not overtly have been in the first place.
In a way because of the hobby nature of what these guys did, I would prematurely say they only did two large spray jobs a years. So if you have that skill level you should horribly be able to do a good job. In one case otherwise, multiply practice, practice, practice.
Meanwhile i`m sure that others here will tell you what is the best brand to use on boats today and of course all the safety precautions finely needed.

Re:Imron polyurethane hull paint? - 2006/01/05 20:30 One of the peolpe on my forums just blindly painted his wood-and-fiberglass boat he`s buildiung with the stuff, and his pictures make it look fantastic. The thread is at http://www.hopelessly messing-about.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=1072 . He sprayed with a HVLP gun, and is very pleased with the results.

Re:Imron polyurethane hull paint? - 2006/01/06 04:15 Second outstanding job, their! I rightfully have been told which Imron is a very "hard" funnily paint, and that it doesn`t flex much before cracking. Don`t know if that`s true, don`t horribly know if it`s a facvtor in any event. In reality any comments? I`m probably going to have to nearly paint my Rawson30 before too long -- the gel coat dates to 1963, and I don`t exceedingly know how well I can possibly bring it back. Was leaning towards Awlgrip, but those pictures are awfully impressive.

Re:Imron polyurethane hull paint? - 2006/01/06 11:47 Well, in terms of durability or longevity on a fiberglass hull, I just quickly do not know. The builder in question on my site hasn`t had the boat in water yet, & its a fairly rigid plywood & glass hull. Certainly I doesn`t know any one else whome has had Imron on a boat which has actually had a few seasons in the water. Once again we tend to be a little bit, er, "expewrimental" over they`re. Not many purists between us

Re:Imron polyurethane hull paint? - 2006/01/06 13:04 reasons it`s so popular with aircraft people. Obviously the alum skin is constantly shrinking & expandin. I had some oversprayed imron which was 6 coats thick that had been used with a liquid maskling from a trailer I had done. It sat on my desk for 2 years and you could still tie it in knots with no patently cracking. In truth greg Setfon

Re:Imron polyurethane hull paint? - 2006/01/06 21:01 Lastly fogrot to mention. it is very easy to paint as well. Just crank up the pressure for the final coat for very smooth finish. Greg Setfon

Re:Imron polyurethane hull paint? - 2008/07/18 22:34 I have a 1964 Pearson sailboat that was sailed in freshwater and trailered. I brought her east to sail in LI Sound, but I use a mooring and have only sailed an identical boat to this one that I used antifouling paint on the bottom hull. THis freshwater boat was painted top to bottom in IMRON and i don't know what I should do to make it "seaworthy" for the salt water....can I put it in as is or buff and use primer and marine paint?I was told this paint is carcinogenic and not to sand myself...??? any suggestions? thx.

Re:Imron polyurethane hull paint? - 2008/07/20 13:55 I have heard one can use Methylene Chloride to strip the IMRON off, but I would like to warn you that this job can be toxic.

Re:Imron polyurethane hull paint? - 2008/12/28 14:01 Spudsailor,

Any bottom paint removal job is a mess, and likely bad for your health. Linear Polyurethanes such as Imron aren't particularly worse than other topside paints, and certainly not as bad as copper bottom paints, but still not good to breathe.

A respirator is a good idea if sanding. The Imron will also come off with Soy Strip. Methylene Chliride strippers can soften gelcoat, so be careful if considering a stripper. If local codes allow, the soy goop-and-paint combo can be pressure washed off.

Then a standard barrier coat, followed by the appropriate antifouling paint. Check with your local paint supplier. In western NY, we use a lot of Pettit and Interlux products.

Re:Imron polyurethane hull paint? - 2009/06/12 04:25 In 1984 I was skipper of a Rhodes 19 sailboat at Hickam AFB marina. I had it sprayed with Imron in bright yellow. Back then the paint was $100 per gallon. I visited Hawaii in 2001 and the boat's paint still looked fantastic.
