HT Prop Pitch Update - 2009/04/29 12:41 Last season, I installed a new Nissan 9.8 on my 8,000-pound, 28-foot sailboat, rigged with the 5" pitch x 8.75" diameter, 4-blade HT prop. The factory tach showed max RPM's in excess of 6,000, maybe up to 6,200 -- just below the rev limiter point. The correct WOT range for the motor is 5,000 to 6,000.

This season, I changed to the 7" pitch version of the HT prop, to lower the max RPM's. What's surprising is how MUCH it slowed the motor down. Now the tach only makes it up to barely 4,900 or 5,000 at WOT.

Seems my ideal pitch will be 6", which is not a stock, off-the-shelf prop. I'll see if my local prop shop can re-pitch one of my props to 6".

Re:HT Prop Pitch Update - 2009/10/09 21:27 Thanks for this info. I have a 6000lb boat with the same motor but with the standard prop (8.5 pitch 3 blade) and it doesn't seem the rpms are high enough at WOT. Based on your info, I'm going to try the high thrust 4 blade 7" pitch prop.

How fast does the 7" pitch prop push your sailboat? Is there any difference with your 5" prop?

Currently, the 8.5" pitch prop will push my sailboat (Cal 28) around 5 knots.

Re:HT Prop Pitch Update - 2009/10/10 13:11 Both the 5 and 7 pitch props give me roughly the same 5K speed. Apparently 9.8 hp on my 8,000-pound (loaded for cruising) HR28 translates into a max 5K boat speed. The difference is in WOT engine RPM. The 5 pitch allows the motor to go slightly above 6,000 and the 7 keeps the RPM below 5,000.

I also installed a 7-pitch on a Catalina 25, and it gets to proper WOT RPM, and makes 6K boat speed.

The really big advantage to the HT prop is the acceleration (low speed control when docking), and the reverse thrust.
