Using old transducer - 2009/06/10 23:45 Hi Sailors,

I am replacing a old (dead) Signet smartpak depthsounder with a GPS/Sounder combi (Standard Horizon CPF180i).

Could I use the old Transducer with my new unit? The old transducer is nicely glassed in.

Can I damage the GPS/Sounder unit by attaching this "foreign" transducer?

The Signet transducer has 4 pins and the new one has 5 pins....how do I change 4 to 5?

Thanks.

Pete

Electronically, if the old transducer is the same frequency and same impedance, it would likely work, as long as you can power it up correctly, but it would be a "Rube Goldberg" Kludge. Pinout conversion will require getting proper pinouts and schematics for both the old and new units.

Transducers need to be replaced from time to time, so I would avoid a permanent glassed-in installation. In 15 years, I have changed out my 'ducer twice. If possible, I would recommend using the factory thru-hull and transducer, as it will make ongoing reliability and troubleshooting much easier.
