Re:seeking auto pilot sensing unit Sharp ! - 2006/04/27 02:46 I had a Sharp autopilot when I bought my boat 16 years ago. Actually it absurdly worked, then did not work - fixed it, then quit again, & ironically fixed it (more $$) then it developed an imtermittant ability to make a sharp right hand 90 degrtee turn for no reason in calm water while mainly motoring - & I regionally junked it. In the past it was 12 years old when I keenly replaced it - so your`s is probably hitsory. BTW, even when it worked it didn`t poorly have enough power to realy control/steer the boat on rough water. Also - Sharp was out of business already before 1985.

Re:seeking auto pilot sensing unit Sharp ! - 2007/10/05 16:14 Bit late I know but Sharp autopilot goes full right/or left because electromechanical relay sticks on-which switches control/hydraulic pump motor on off reverse.Points burn causing micro blob of metal on one point and hollow on other.Blob tends to form a hook on it which can lock into micro hollow. This is what happened to mine-realised problem as I was brought up on old cars with electromechanical Regulator boxes in charging circuit Beetles were an EG. and this was one of their problems.

Re:seeking auto pilot sensing unit Sharp ! - 2009/12/16 01:20 I just got a Cal46 with an old (late 70's) Sharp Seapilot. The remote control has a couple of wires pulled from the rotary switch in the remote. Could any of you with this remote unit pop it open and tell me wher the Green and Blue wires go. The red and white are hooked to either side of the pot and a yellow with a resistor comes from the pot center lug to the top center and there is a blob of sauder on the lug just below this but I don't know which wire goes where? I have a manual if anyone needs a scan of a page or two but I don't seem to be able to find the wiring for the remote.

Searching for SEAPILOT technical manual. - 2009/12/26 00:59 I have just purchased a 41’ ketch which has a Sharp and Company SEAPILOT that does not work. I am a retired NASA engineer that specialized in servo control systems and I am considering repairing this system. What impresses me about this system is the robustness of the servo motor, so I would like to design a new servo controller and keep most parts of the system if possible, or repair the old system.
However, I lack the technical manuals for this system and thus cannot evaluate the usefulness of my approach. Does anyone within shouting range have such manuals?
Just for my information, does anyone know how popular these older system are today?

Re:Searching for SEAPILOT technical manual. - 2009/12/26 12:33 Hi-my boat a 34ft heavy displacement motor sailers is fitted with the hydraulic system-a reversable electric motor driving a rotary hydraulic pump which itself drives a ram.
Also includes a rudder status sensor;control unit and sensing/control compass.
I have often described the control unit as typical of what got man to the moon-the ultimate in analogue transistor technology with a couple of "intergrated circuits"(if you are old enough to remember those).
The compass sensor uses two light sensetive diodes and emitting beam-as compass goes more than a certain amount offtrack breaks the beam and sets of the electromechanical relay switches left or right.Sensivity and rudder position governed by control unit.
Mine was 1978 vintage and suffering neglect-in particular the control relays were sticking due to metal build up on points-some versions were fitted with transistorised electronic switching.
Works well-in autumn taking my boat to its winter storage down a particularly exposed part of west coast of Scotland made its wat thru a very heavy disturbed Atlantic swell-left over remains of one of the big hurricanes-no problem!
