Re:Icom 802 SSB marine/ham - 2008/07/01 09:13 OK. Do you have an auto tuner? Usually new SSB radios are not HAM unless they are tweaked. Firstly find out the calling/emergency frequencies - eg 2182 (AM, not SS, Can you guys get radio checks off the coast guard or other ?

If you are in a marina, you may have trouble getting out amongst the masts/antennae.

Lots for you to read up on.
cheers

Re:Icom 802 SSB marine/ham - 2009/02/12 10:33 Not only technically unwise to make a test call with your SSB radio while in a marina, but also forbidden by international regulations. I guess, the reason is the interference problem if you transmit 150 watts or more very close to other ships.

As your SSB icom IC-M802 is fitted with DSC, I can indicate the MMSI numbers of coast stations to be called for testing in your area. You shold make a Routine call to them and they will tell you the frequencies for voice communications.

Probably they will be glade to receive your call. I have good experience in Europe.

SSB icom IC-M802 is not authorised in Europe (many yachtmen use it), but the newer IC-M801 has a better specification and it is OK to use it in the GMDSS by pleasure boats and small crafts.

Let us know your experience. Regards, Mercator

Re:Icom 802 SSB marine/ham - 2010/01/18 17:26 Mercator, can you give some more info on the international regulation that forbids transmitting from a marina?

It goes on a lot here in Mexico with cruisers' nets.

I have posted on a separate topic the issue I have...

Thanks
