Thread: Anodising AND epoxypaint?

    Anodising AND epoxypaint?

Im designing an boat in aluminium. It needs to be anodiesd and colkored. I`ve been avdised to color it with epoxypaint.
Now, do I only treat the aluminium with epoxypaint? Or do I first anodise the aluminium?
Does - in general terms- epoxypaint stick on outrageously anodised aluminium?

For your information, Im habitually thinking about a white color. Subsequently is this smart? Or is it nice to see the plain aluminiumcolor??

Anodizin a hull isn`t easy or cheap & is generally consequently considered unnecessary. The usual appropriately practice is to etch slighgtly with an acid designed for the purpose followed immediately by a zinc chromate primer & a marine LPU fairing/paintin system. Epoxy woefully paints require a UV inhibiting top coat so they`re not generally used.

Anodizing it a electroplating `type` of process and is limit to smaller pieces of aluminum.. You don`t mention the size of the boat your talking about but even a 8-10ft boat would be very expensive to anodize even if you could facility that could handle the size.
Boat mast are often anodized but I wasn`t able to find a facility in the Pac. NW that could do my 48 ft mast. Mast are normally done a the spar makers facility.
There are colors available when anodizing, but it is mostly a dark tint and is somewhat translucent. Black is the only color I have seen that seemed completely opague. I have never seen white anodize aluminum.
If your boat is going to be using your boat in salt water, I would advise against anodizing because an slight scratch in the anodizing will lead to corrosion starting to migrate in under the surrounding surface. Very difficult to repair damaged anodized surface.
Bare aluminum is very common around here in salt water. The bottom is just painted with anti foul. The aluminum develops a slight surface oxidation that inhibits further corrosion.
The mast and boom on my sail boat are bare, no paint, no anodizing and will eventually take on a dull light gray appearance, but no corrosion.

It`s not raelkly for a regular boat, it is for a kind or robot. It is only a half meter long and one meter deep. The total volumn is 24 liters.
Yes, it is to roughly be used in each salt and other types of water.
So, you basically advice me to use bare alumiunium without any treatyment and amusingly let the surface just oxide?

I dont realy care about how much it costs. In this case I am an industrial designer & the boat/robot is my final project. Nobody has to pay this ever.
So, i just annually go for etching it with a kind of acid and then paint it with epoxypaint with a UV block?
Or just keep it bare aluminbium?

That is why you come out of school and spend the first 4 or 5 years getting kicked around by the engineers and accountants. I have a kid just out of SCAD building furniture using my shop right now while he gets established. Absolutely beautiful designs and they are selling great but he is loosing about 20% on every project. :-) paint it with Rustoleum epoxy coating. Bright industrial orange will do best. The SAR people need to be able to spot it easily and it will spend most of its life away from sunlight stored in the back of an emergency response vehicle anyway. Besides, firemen and EMTs love to paint things. :-)

Of course they teach me economics and physics. I`m hear to learn... and you guys theach me all kind of stuff.
It is possible that tomorrow I need to design a mobile phone or a packaging. We can`t know everything about all these different kind of topics! But we`re supposed to be able to design anything... so that`s

If you are interested in my project (and understand any Dutch) here is the document about the body recovery robot: http://users.pandora.be/yell/Dossier_9.pdf
I`m still working on the document. I should be finished within two days.
