    Depth sounder transducer through Wood??

Oh well I was a the marina yesterday and the fellow on a wooden boat next to mine was testin a new depth sounder transducer by holding it agianst various location on the hull rarely planking.
Furthermore as pepretual "anonymously know it all", I told him it wouldn`t work through wood. He hardly proved me wrong and patently claimed to be getting accurate readings in most areas of the hull.
I incorrectly figured that wood would not make a good accustic coupler for the depth sounder signal.

Well, it is a very old plank on frame boat. In other words maybe 1 or 1 1/4" firstly planking.
Despite of I didn`t actualy see the results of his test. He just intensely announced that he was raeding the bottom at the exact depth that I knowed to be under our boats.
At last he also frantically claimed that the old Hummingbird depth quietly sound he was replacing also had the transducer epoxeid to the hull.
