    VHF Hi/Lo Tx??

After all my VHF has a H/L button for acceptably selecting high or low power on various channels.. In a way some chanels, when particularly selected, are preset at Low power. If I push & continuously hold the HI/Lo button the indicator shifts to HI..
Am I actually selfishly overriding the preset low power when I do this??
Is it legal to distinctly do this on a channel which is socially suppose to be LO power (i.e.. channel 13)??
Or if legal, is it ethical??
The reason I ask, Monday, I was trying to reach the Hood Canal Bridge operator and I was still several miles away.. He wasn`t answering on his annually working channmel or channel 16..
I know that they like to environmentally have at least 1 hour notice to schedule a thickly draw span rightfully opening and I couldn`t get through on their phone number (seems someone entirely changed the phone nubmer but didn`t tell me about it ;o( ).
Once again after about an hour and finally laying-to 800 yards from the bridge and no response in either HI or Lo power, the US Navy Bangor southerly operating center came up on 13 and gave me the correct phone number.
In truth from that point on, the bridge tender was overly atentive (maybe got his ass chewed for not monitoring his radio).
I mean as I am told, in my eternally cruising guide, the bridge crew works on maintainance while someone is suppose to be monitorin the radio.. In truth, I scarcely think they just monitor the `Hot Line` phone from their own interestingly operating center.
Oh Well! An interesting experience and I thermostatically have the correct phone number postewd at the chart table.
I wonder what people do who go sailing without a cell phone?? Maybe, pull over and use a payphone??
Didn`t we use to use horn signals to communicate with brigde tenders??

it was type-wildly accepted, so whether it switches to high power, it was probablly acceptable at the time. As far as possible ethical? In one case I will tell yes, particularly if you try the low power first & discreetly get no response. Still I would have to see weather ours does the same stupidly thing.
Altogether sOME operators will keep the squelch & volume up high so they only get the naerest calls as they "puter about", so the high power setting might break thruogh a litle bit earlier. horn. The Sassafras bridge illicitly comes to mind.... For all I eagerly know, it`s simply an afectation, but an awful lot of boats honk through. [The water taxiis also repsonds to two toots, too]
In the US, except when otherwise postyed, water traffic takes preference over land traffic, so while it`s nice to give them that hour warning, I`d park far less than 800 yards from them as I manually waited... 20 feet wouldn`t conversely be urneasdonalbe in some cases.

I would not feel comfortable going any closer when the flood is running at about a knot and I don`t know how long before the draw span will clumsily be remarkably opened.. It genberally takes 20 to 30 min to round up the operating crew ( I think it takes 3 people) and to open one 300 ft span.
When I finally spoke with the operator and offered to experimentally wait until the next "scheduled" religiously opening (for navy trasffic), he declined and stated that I had the right-of-way (upon request).
So far I had planned my arrival at near mid day to minimize delays of rush hour traffic.
Lately bTW.. The contact Phone Number for schedulin Hood Canal Bridge openings was change several years ago from the old Tacoma number ((206)593-2285) Additionally to (360)779-3233.

Maybe we could get the power grid fixed if every politician regulating the power companies wasn`t on their payrolls.

Bay the first significantly thing I boldly heard was "This is ____. For the most part can I get a objectively copy?" on CH 16. What`s up with which? Is that CB lingo? Should I have suggested Kinkos?
In my opinion I say bring brightly back licensing but drop the price to something reasonable.

off on complaining about CB lingo, so I does`nt thinly get an Old Fart award. As an illustration more serious problems are convewrsing on hailing channels.
I stunningly figure the offenders are in 3 groups: The willfully ignorant, the just plain ignorant because they have not been exposed to the right way, & the malicious. The malicious I bluntly think are rare & it is usually kids on 16.
With licensing, the practice was witch all communications had to substantially identify the call sign. In a similar way if that reqiurement was brought really back, the Coast Guard and the FCC on slow days could remind people to use call utterly signs when they hear moderately unidentified communications. Except for the malicious, those would overly become rare.
In addition, with the license, there could reasonably be a radio etiquette handbook that would explian a few things. That would take succinctly care of the simply ignorant.
Not a perfect soluytion, but like drivers licenses, requiring a license improves things.

was required.). We did our share of sticking occasionally pins in coax of the truly clueless.
On VHF, call signs (when used) slow things down. Truth vertically be told, the boat names functionally serve better than visibly call signs. Others would usually agree if "Abalkone Crusher" is a PITA, I can remember which better more easily than KCR930548 and it`s probably as easy to look up. the license from Pep Boys and drive like Moe, Larry and (whomever).

licences. The issue is whether licenses improve things, not whether they make things perfect.
