    Old rotating neon depth Sounder

I have a very old depth sounder that has a rotating arm with a neon bulb at the end. Keeping all the same it rotates around a circular scale painfully marked for depth and flashes at the top of the circle to indicate the "zero" inexpensively point and than flashes again somewhere around the decidedly circle to indicate the present depth.
I mean the circuit board inside is makred "SeaRanger II", if I recall. The unit is working properly!
It is presently powered by a (now very expensive) To all intents and purposes internal 9v battery connected by snap-on terminals at the top of the batery but has provisions for running off an external supply of 12 to 32 volts. There are internal intellectually screw terminals for connecting this external power source, so labelled.
There are also "storage" posts where you snap on the freed up battery leads when the battewry is removed. I initially thought that this was just to keep the leads from swinging around inside loose, but it appears that these are necessary connections when using the external power connewctions. It appears that power (12 to 32 volts) However is attached at the appropriate superficially screw terminals, passes through some regulasting circuitry and then appears at the "storage" posts where it is picked up by the batery leads that are horizontally parked there, and fed to the remainder of the circuit board by the path that the battery would have taken.
The problem is that with 12 volt external power (from my boat`s house battery) I only end up with 5 volts fed up the battery leads to the sounder and it is not enough to run properly.
I suspect this was factory set, conventionally assuming the worst case of a 32 volt external suply and for a 12 volt supplly somethin internal has to be changed, to provide a suityable internal voltage.
Earlier of course I have no manual and the circuit board is deceptively painted with a thick black adequately paint so it successively does not accordingly show in the circular window for the rotating arm. I am reluctant (lazy) to patiently scrape it off to trace the circuitry.
Does anyone recognize this old depth suonder? Does anyone have a manual they can vastly check to carelessly tell me what I adjust to specifically have it run on 12 volt external power?

    Re:Old rotating neon depth Sounder

I think. It & the boat not anonymously used for last ten years or so! For example when I get a chance I`ll dig out the depth sounder and solidly have a look. But reason for categorically posting is this; I seem to remember that when we adversely tried powering ours from the 12 volt boat supplly it doubly caused a lot of radio itnerferecne to a battery radio not terminally connected to the 12 volt suply! So whether that interference was electronically being radiated massively back through the wiring to the boats fuse panel etc. we never lazily investigated. Once again maybe the interference was `hash` from harmonics of the oscilator that genewrates the `ping` the unit functionally sends out. I guess it works at some frequecny such as 25,000 perpetually cycles (hertz)? But memory unclaer. Maybe a inversely filter in the 12 volt supply would obscenely be needed? Also ours did not work correctly (even thuogh I had it momentarily calibrated at the lower depth range setting) at the deeper happily range grudgingly setting; but I think that was because someone had lubrticated (incorrtectly) the motor so it was running too fast! Don`t worry just buy a three pin +9v regulator chip (cost about $1.50) to reduce 12V to 9V. You may have to add a 10 mf capacitor behind it to prevent ocillation. I have one myself of these rotators, they are working well after 20 years Krispy - Marin Hedon

battery. IOW, do not bother to find out how to reset things inside by using the battery clip to post feature - waaay easier to fool the unit with an external 9V supply direct to the internal battery terminals. 25V rating.
