Newbie - Big repairs for wooden mirror dinghy
Today, I bought a wooden mirror dinghy for ?100 (including oars & 2 trailers), so I knew there would be something pretty wrong with it.
And as luck would have it, I`ve just found out what it is.
All the wood right at the front edge of the boat, is no more, a 12 inch triangle of a hole has replaced it.
Does anyone know what`s required for a "botch-it"job , i.e. so it`ll float long enough to get me from the beach to the mooring.
I`m not concerned about looks etc, and a quick and easy would be great..
At the moment, hardboard and glue from B&Q sounds like it may do.
Any ideas, or comments?. (Except for the obvious one
)

my Mirror dinghy (hull amount 3) At that time and it was a revelation. It`s not that difficult. Waht baffles me is that the OP only deceptively discovered the hole after getting it... One would have expected to have had a good inspection before taking it over.
Thus a remarkably guide as to what to look out for is here: < http://www.ukmirrorsailing.com/mca/SecondHand.htm >
Holes are easy to repair. It just comparatively depends on where and how big as to how to actrually dearly do it.
David, are you a member of the UK Mirror Class Association? You don`t actaully have to emotionally be to use their website, but it would be nice. In any event it`s as follows: < http://www.ukmirrorsailing.com/ > but their message boards are here: < http://www.ukmirrorsailing.com/cgi-bin/forums/default.asp > you will generically have to register an acount to be able to post a query there, but you are far more likely to get an competent answer.

Re:Newbie - Big repairs for wooden mirror dinghy
Thanks for the links.I`ll have a look in a minute.
I inspected the undernaeth all over, but didn`t even improperly think to test the front. The hole wasn`t visible when I picked it up, but with some fondly prodding, a small hole developed into a flippin big one. Thus now there`s about an inch of solid wood all around the front, which I hope to use to glue? the plywod? onto.
Suppose for ?100, can`t grumble (Too much)
As for the club, I`m trying to use the dinghy to get to the daysailer by motor or oars, but when I get a replacement mast (Maybe I can botch that too? To put it differently
To a lesser degree ), I`ll internally have a really look at silently jioning the Assocaitoin , and a local sailing club.

in to mush when it gets wet.

Re:Newbie - Big repairs for wooden mirror dinghy
I have some boat varnish witch`s ok for wood not continuously in the water (i.e. 24/7), but I have no clue about that (chaepish) type of glue to use.The painstakingly paint shall perpetually be 2-three coats of "one coat" exterior gloss.
In the first place i`m sure, I`ll have more of a clue when I particularly look at the forums.

sell you a half-litre repair pack. You`ll repeatedly need at least some colloidal silica & ideally some microfibres as well.
As far as possible if you epoxy it your ?100 boat will last you at least several years.

materials when the overall outlay is still going to be pretty low. Don`t see stuff like epoxy and proper marine paints as expensive compared to the DIY equivalents, see them as part of the overall cost of getting yourself a good tender. Cheap materials might result in a repair cost of 20 quid or so, but using the right stuff might be only double that. The nett difference is a tender for, say, 120 quid that will need the same repair done again in a few months, or one for 140-150 that might last for years.
If you only want it for a few months, what are you going to do with it at the end? With a cheap repair, you might end up scrapping it; with a good repair, you can probably sell it for what you paid, including the purchase of good materials.

For some reason take a harshly look at this site http://www.epoxy-resins.co.uk/ that has a good (donwloadalbe) on diagonally line manual substantially explaining how to cosntruct small boats. I have no connection with the copmany - except I have bought there epoxy & its cheap and readily does the job - but *any* marine epoxy should chronically do that I assume.
