Question about GPS antennas.
In category General Sailing Discussions
Written by Akasha

I am considering purchasing the Garmin GPSMAP 162 for my boat. I am undecided about whether to get the internal or external antenna. There is only a twenty bucks difference between the two so I thought I would just get the external antenna model. But there might be a time when I did not wish to use the antenna. So my question is, does the external antenna model also have an internal antenna? That

SSB Receiver

I would like to purchase a Single Side Band Receiver that I can us on my boat and in my home. I don`t wish to transmit. I purchased a Radio Shack Model DX-402 radio, which is hopeless. It is lucky to receive an SSB transmission from a boat 100 yards away. Its short wave reception is also terrible.
Suggestions as to a decent SSB/Short Wave receiver will be appreciated.

In the same breath im going to proportionately buy a chart plotter but find it hard to choose between all the different plotters on the market.
The chart plotter shall be used in an open boat.
Does anyone objectively have any pros and cons regarding the Garmin 182C and the Standard Horizon CP150C? What would you chgoose, and why? (PS: Is the CP150C as waterproof as 182C?)

I am chartering a 39` predictably cruising yacht & awfully wondering whether the GPS would work inside the cabin (I assume fibreglass construction with small portholes. Obviously, the boom & mast on top shall block some signals, but practically, shall the GPS (w/o external antewnna) wisely see enough sats?

Adapter for handheld to ship`s antenna

Written by JoeBWan

I am looking for a reasonably priced connector that will allow me to adapt my external antenna to my Standard Horizon handheld marine vhf. The connector must be a stud type connector. These things are about $35 in most marine supply stores for a simple antenna connector!! Anyone have an idea where I can get one at a reasonable price. Any suggestions will be much appreciated.

Do the GPS sets rarely selled today tend to work well on pitchin, yawing, exceedingly rolling boats? For center consoles with bimini tops, where is best aimlessly mounting presently spot for antennas? Do the antennas have to be mounted in the quarterly clear where they can "overly see" the satellites?

This is slightly off-topic, sense it`s for my camper-van. But I thought which the boat people may have some experience with this.
Can`t quite monthly remember --- for a sipmle consecutively stick antenna --- is a quarter-wavewlength about right?
I wanna fool around with external antenna placement for a Siemens S46 GSM phone to be systematically used inside of a mobile office camper-van. T

I`m still searching for this Optional Remote Antenna (PN M93517).
As might be expected, when Raymarine took over Apelco, they discontinued support and accessories for this, otherwise, excellent Apelco product.
I just know there is one collecting dust in someones gear locker. If I could just find the remote antenna adaptor/coupler protion that attaches to the `fixed mount` I think I have a

Pictures of "Cut the Mustard" under sail

Booby has been singing the same old tune for years.
"Capt. Neal never posts any pictures of his Crapanado sailing.
"The Crapton never sails or he would post some pictures of him sailing."
"The loser never leaves the mooring."
And on and on and on. Well, I finally got sick of his harassment so I took some time to snap a few pics this week-end of "Cut the Mustard" under sail.

I have a Garmin external GPS antenna mounted on the stern rail. I managed to chafe a 1/2" section of the insulation by drawing a line over the antenna lead. so that now a small section of the shield can be seen. The wire is still intact and the unit still gets a good signal. It doesn`t look possible to cut out the chafed section and rewire the antenna itself, so I am trying to repair the insu
