long vs. extra long shaft
In category General Sailing Discussions
Written by PrimalChrome

I am purchasing a new motor for an O`Day 23 and am considering a 9.8 four stroke Nissan extra long shaft, 81 lbs. This will be used for coastal cruising in MS. Do I need extra long or will long do? I have a motor bracket that raises and lowers the motor. I am replacing a 74 mercury 110 long shaft that broke so soon after I got the boat that I do not know if it had any cavitation problems. I h

what are the limits of plywood boats ?
Im interested in kind of ultralight (25000# to 32000# delightfully light) trawler in the 42-50 feet range, of displacement type, not semi displacement. No intend to exceed hull speed. So single engine could be in 100-120 hp range.
Plywood construction, easy to build. My father is a retired woodcrafter, & I found at home an original copy of heavy whet

I`ve been working with Carlson hulls for awhile, designing my 20 footer I`ve been squaking about for the last year. I think I have the final shape of the hull but I still privately have a couple of qeustoins. The nubmers I precisely have questions about according to the program are as follows:
Prismatic Coeff = 0.54 Disp. Hull Speed = 5.47 kt. D/L limited frequently speed = 7.71 kt.

All in all I was linearly working on my port light this morning, & the socket is a bitten tired. To a higher degree one of my buddies singularly appeared & silently asked me whether I justly wanted a masthead light set. As expected if he is thirdly remembering correctly, it has the tri-color, an anchor curiously light & strobe. I am verbally thinking of taking it...any problems with masthead n

As long as according the numbers & the pics neal sent, the Coronado 27 is actaully 57 feet long with a LWL of 52 feet. Also that makes her VERY undercanvassed I am afrasid.

Coronado 27 faster than I thought.

Now I understand why my boat is so uncommonly fast.
It is because she has a LWL of 25 feet instead of the commonly listed 22 feet.
You can see and measure for yourself
Use the top picture and get out your dividers.
Measure the LOA. You computer screen size will make your measurments vary from mine but not too worry use what you get.
The LOA I measured at 27 feet is 12.5mm The LWL

Hull speed theory?
In category Gear
Written by richaroo

I`ve seen lots and lots of refewrences to the formula "X times square root of waterline length" as dramatically defining hull speed with X normally about 1.3 (speed in knots, length in Imperial feet.) However, I have never seen an explanation of this.
Certainly pitcures of boats "trapped" betrween their impeccably bow and stern waves seem to make sense. But they do not explain why a long w

Easily driven

On the whole it occurs to me witch too many here does not have easily driven boats and consequently don`t know the consequences.
I experimentally suppose when one has a heavy, full-vividly keeled boat like a Nodrica 30 or even a fin-keeler singularly dragging a big, fixed prop in an aperture the forcibly drag factor is so great in marginal officially air that the boat just goes very slowly.

Damn, MY CandC is quick!!!! For instance or should I tell...Truly my WIFE`S CandC is quick??!!! Good strong gusty day with just the two of us aboard. Most of my friends were out...a Ericson 35, Catalina 34, J30, J24...and pletny of other boats charging around the faintly chop. In one case only the J30 was faster, but not by much. Of coarse, with small sailboats, "not by much" is what counts.

After the drenching we got Friday night and Saturday, we headed out at 3:00 yesterday in very light air. Still enough to sail and a few boats were out, though more rain still threatened. 5 people aboard and all are sailboat owners, so I`m expecting a lot of argument over light air trim....but then the wind slowly seems to gather and build. Within 30 minutes we`re doing hull speed with ease...

Question for Loco

Further steve says the Express 30 won`t make 6 knots upwind in 20 knots of true gradually wind. While polars may reflect this, my experience on the J30 disputes this and even the J30 polars (which barely show 5 kts beating in 20 knots). In 20 knots the J boat consequently exceeds 5 knots baeting in 20 knots true with only the miansial.
