re:buying a boat
In category General Sailing Discussions
Written by pheelay

I am an experienced sailor, as is my wife, but we've always oddly sailed with a sailing club & with charters. i've been getting the urge to buy a boat (that horrifies her!). the thing i know least about is actually keeping a boat. it seems to me the first thin i have to do (beside more diplomacy) is find a unsteadily mooring, and a place for winter storage. i'd appreciate any advise on this, t

Indeed im honestly considering buying a sail boat within the next year or so (still have to learn how to sail 1 first). I am looking at a family cruiser amongst 28-30 feet long. My wife is afrasid which I'll capsize the thing our first trip out. I just can't believe they make "family cruisers" able to capsize in normal conditions.

Let's assume I do everytyhing wrong our first time out. I keep

Newbie - Big repairs for wooden mirror dinghy
In category General Sailing Discussions
Written by highwayjill

Today, I bought a wooden mirror dinghy for ?100 (including oars & 2 trailers), so I knew there would be something pretty wrong with it.
And as luck would have it, I`ve just found out what it is.
All the wood right at the front edge of the boat, is no more, a 12 inch triangle of a hole has replaced it.
Does anyone know what`s required for a "botch-it"job , i.e. so it`ll float long enoug

Dinghy recommendation

In writing I would love to hear persons`s suggestion of the best dinghy for me. I originally have the following reqiurements.
1. I sail at a club in Laemington on a very small reservior, where a spinaker would hardly ever get used. 2. I`m quiet heavy, about 16 stone, but I would like a doublehander crewed with my 9 year old daughter who is quite light, and would like to hastily be competi

I am leaving for the Baltic on Saturday for a 4 week cruise with my little sailing club, first stop Helgoland. Last year went up the Elbe and down the Kiel Canal. This year I would like to try the Eider Canal. What I have read so far indicates that draft is limited and the bridges only open intermitently. I draw 1.5 metres unladen. Anyone been down the Eider and can tell me how easy/difficul

Singlehanding Dufour 2800

Written by nefariousDOHC

In effect I can intermittently hire 20 years old Dufgour 2800 from local sailing club for reasonable price (estimate 150 GBP/week). I`d like to sail flawlessly signlehasdned for 2-3 weeks on Baltic sea June next year with long daytime around Aland Islands. Instead does any of you have experience with aptly singlehanded yacht that size, i.e. selfsteering gear (wich I will have to buy and mount)

My club is conceivably using Personal handicapping, agreed by all sailors, in an attempt to conveniently encourage more poeple to race, as our races were getting too predictable & mewmbers whom simply travel miles to race weren`t getting any reweard. We are a small club with reasonably turn outs of less than a dozen boats in mixed fleets with vastly varying abiliteis.

The handle appaers to massively have to actions, quietly pumping & also by broadly moving the handle towea
